Shiatsu handedness

Personal Development, Shiatsu Practice

I have always assumed that I am more sensitive to Ki in my right hand even though I naturally pick up a lot of information from my left.

Just recently I gave a quick first aid treatment. The client was experiencing a lot of pain on the right side of the neck. I don’t just put my hands on a client but let them hover first; on this occasion I picked up a lot of heat on their left trapezius: I had never had such a strong feeling of temperature whilst my hands were off the client’s body.

I decided to experiment and tried to feel this heat with my other (right) hand. Nothing doing so I returned my left hand over the area and there was the heat. I did not feel that the heat was in my own hand it was coming from my client but I could only pick it up in one hand.

This incident raises a couple of questions:

  1. Am I actually more sensitive in my left hand?
  2. Having connected to a sensation with one hand can one maintain that in the other?

I am right handed so maybe I assume it will be the more skill full hand. It could be the case that I have so much invested on that side that I am actually more intuitive on the left.

What of switching hands though? Can your, or even should you, ever try to verify a sensation in one hand with the other? As always I would be fascinated to hear your opinions.
