Work and quality of Shiatsu

Personal Development

One of the big problems as a Shiatsu student is fitting treatments around work.

I have a 30 mile commute to work and usually get home around 6pm. I usually book Shiatsu treatments at 7.30pm. That gives me time to eat and travel to my client. What is often the problem is that there is not enough time to unwind and mentally prepare to treat.

Shiatsu is often called a massage but I feel that massage is a physical treatment. A Shiatsu treatment should be deeper on an emotional level for both the giver and receiver and on those occasions that work is still buzzing in my mind I usually feel unsatisfied by my treatment. I feel that I have given a massage and not a Shiatsu.

To date my clients have usually been pleased with my Shiatsu and never made a negative comment even when I have felt the session has been unsatisfactory. I would hope that they are being honest and that as they become more accustomed to my practise they will spot these differences and feedback to me.

However, if I feel unsatisfied by my work then maybe that is a positive thing for my own development as a Shiatsu practitioner. If I simply walked away from a client with no thought of what happened then obviously no empathy existed and the Shiatsu was just a physical massage.
